UJUMBE: MIAKA YA MAISHA YETU ( MESSAGE: THE YEARS OF OUR LIVES)

Mchungaji Mwangasa (Resident Pastor) akihubiri kanisani
Ufufuo na Uzima, Dar es Salaam
Mwanzo 47:7-12

madhabahuni

MESSAGE: THE YEARS OF OUR LIVES

By Ps Mwangasa (Resident Pastor)

Genesis 47: 7-12
Verse 9 “And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.”

The above verse in an excerpt from the conversation that Jacob had with Pharaoh after Joseph had introduced his father to Pharaoh. The amazing thing to note is when Pharaoh inquired of Jacob “how old art thou?”, the verse above was Jacob’s reply to Pharaoh.

Jacob’s reply teaches us an important thing, if you follow up on Jacob’s life you will discover that verily it was one of many-a-pilgrimage from birth, later in life he fled to Laban from Esau, as if that was not enough he then journeyed again to reconcile with Esau, and on top of everything else the news of Joseph’s apparent death weighed heavily also in making his life sorrowful. That is why when Joseph was asked his age, it was necessary for him to differentiate his hard life from that which was better lived out by his ancestors (Abraham and Isaac).

In reading up on Genesis 31:38-41, we can follow up on the life of Jacob whilst he was with Laban; the passage describes the relation between Jacob and Laban after Laban had searched him out for his missing idols. That is why Jacob complained that he worked day and night; had his wage changed ten times and furthermore, had the cost of every ill that occurred passed onto him (Genesis 30:25-44.) Despite all of this, Laban oppressed Jacob and therefore Jacob’s life was filled with hardship and mistreatment.

In spite of Laban’s constant breaching of their agreements, Jacob beheld God and it is here that we see the wonders of God when Jacob put rods in the water that caused the animals to mate and conceive when they went for a drink. Here we learn that even though men have oppressed you, God can help you such that you will even prosper more than those who oppressed you. This feat took place when Laban took back all the male flocks so that Jacob would not get the offspring of those animals. In getting saved you unite with God and there is no need for you to despair over loneliness, for there is God who will never forsake you.

It is written For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith” John 5:4. When you get saved God unites with you, meaning that you are born of God and everything that is born of God overcomes the world. God wanted that which was promised to Abraham to be fulfilled in Jacob.

It could be that your life’s story is like that of Jacob’s, a life filled with pilgrimage and wondering without a sense of direction. The imperative thing to know here is that, in having God you have the answers for your life. It is written “Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.” Proverbs 8:18. Seek after God and from thence shall you meet with riches and honor (righteousness). You know your age and the hardships you have gone through but God still wants to know of the days of your life.

In the passage of the prodigal son, even he after speaking with his father about his past had everything restored unto him (Luke 15:17-23). Today, tell God of the years of your life. God says Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.” Isaiah 43:26. There is need for us to converse with God, do not discuss with man but instead with God. Jesus told the woman at the well that He is the living water and be there anything that you are thirsty for, tell Jesus Christ (John 4:14). Our God is a God who saves and the path of deliverance from death has He!
